This procedure will reset the password on a Cisco PIX-501 Firewall to default settings.
Model: PIX-501 PIX-501-BUN-K8 PIX-501-BUN-K9 PIX-501-50-BUN-K9
Console Kit: Cisco Blue Console Cable
This procedure requires that you know what version of software is currently on your firewall. Once you know what version you have installed, you will need to download (from Cisco.com) the npxx.bin file required for your version of software. For example: np63.bin will work for any that has PIX version 6.3x software installed. If you have 5.1 you will need np51.bin and so forth.
You will also need a TFTP server from which to download the npxx.bin file.
Step 1: Power On
Step 2: Press ESC when prompted to go to boot monitor
Step 3: Plug Ethernet Cable In Ethernet 1 Port
Step 4: Type Interface 1 and press enter
Step 5: Type Address 192.168.1.5 (This is the address to assign temporarily to your PIX) and press enter
Step 6: Type Server 192.168.1.10 (This is the address of your TFTP server) and press enter
Step 7: Type File np63.bin and press enter (The file name is dependant on the software version on the fire wall.)
Step 8: Type TFTP and press enter
Step 9: Answer yes to the questions
Step 10: Unplug Ethernet Cable
Step 11: The password is now cleared
