Cisco Catalyst 6509 | Redundant Supervisor Engines

This procedure describes the basics for installing dual redundant supervisor engines in a Cisco Catalyst WS-C6509 switch.

You'll want to work on one supervisor engine at a time and then once you have each of them with the correct software, you can place both online and let them synchronize.

1. Install the latest or your choice of CAT OS on each of the supervisor engines. The CAT OS runs on the supervisor switch card, such as a WS-X6K-SUP2-2GE.

2. If you have MSFC or MSFC2 cards installed on the supervisor engines (MSFCs run router IOS software), install the latest or your choice of Cisco IOS on each of the MSFC/MSFC2.

3. Install both supervisors engines together now and the primary supervisor engine (usually slot 1) will synchronize with the 2nd supervisor engine.

This is just a general strategy and is not intended to be a step by step instruction. Hope this helps.
